Biographical Note
Harold Lautner was born on January 14, 1902 in Traverse City, Michigan. He received s B.S. degree from Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) in 1925 and a Masters degree in 1936 in City Planning from Harvard University. From 1937-1940 he was an instructor of City Planning at Harvard. From 1941 to 1946 he held various positions in the Federal Works Agency, Federal Public Housing Authority, and the Urban Land Institute in Washington, D.C. Lautner came to Michigan State College in 1946 as the head of the Department of Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture. At the same time held the position of Landscape Architect for all university property. In 1960 he became the Director of Campus Park and Planning. Lautner retired in 1970 and passed away on December 3, 1992.
Scope and Contents note
The Harold Lautner papers includes an issue of "Landscape Architecture" from January 1954 which contains the article by Lautner, "The Landscape Architect Serving a University Combined Teaching and Creation of Landscape Values." In addition there is an audio cassette tape recording of Lautner reminiscing about his days as a student at Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) and describing the campus during his time as an employee at MSU. There is also one photograph of Lautner.
