Historical Note

The Tower Guard is a sophomore honor society that selects its members from the top two percent of freshmen with the highest grade point average. The group started in 1933 as the female honor society, the Q girls. It was intended as an offshoot of the MSU Sphinx Chapter of Mortar Board, a senior honor society. In 1934, members of the faculty convinced the Q girls to change their name to the Tower Guard. In 1977, Tower Guard also began inducting men as a result of Title IX.

The Tower Guard works for the advancement of the student body at MSU. Members have performed such services as working at registration, reading for the blind, as well as other services for students with disabilities.

Scope and Content

The records of the Tower Guard consist of minutes, reports, correspondence, memos, agendas, and scrapbooks. The records have been created by the students in the organization and are rather informal and vary in their content. In addition, there are a large number of undated records. The Minute book contains a brief history of the Tower Guard and minutes of the meetings from 1933 to 1944. The Administrative records contain Articles of the Tower Guard and the Preamble. The Agendas detail what was planned for the meetings. The correspondence and memos are letters or memos that were sent to members and officers, and items received by the group from university offices. Functions are records that relate to events the Tower Guard were involved in. The handbooks contain articles and constitutions, member lists for those years, and songs. The History contains background information on the group, program for a commemorative dinner, pledge, photocopy of certificate of membership, and the song “Tower Guard Dream Girl.” Members contains various lists of members of the Tower Guard. Minutes contains minutes of Tower Guard meetings. Registration contains information on Tower Guard members working at Registration. Tower Guard registration is information regarding the registration of the group to be recognized as a student organization.
