Biographical Note

Chene Orson Pemberton, the author's grandfather, was born in Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1831. As a young man, he attended Union Academy in Knoxville, Tennessee, and in 1850 he married Louisa Boyd of Allegheny County, New York. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Pemberton joined the 45th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and was wounded during the siege of Charleston, South Carolina. After his discharge he returned to Pennsylvania, and in 1863 he sold his property there, moving his family to Mecosta County, Michigan to live. In addition to farming, Pemberton traveled as a minister in the Methodist Church and preached in the surrounding counties. Chene and Louisa Pemberton had twelve children, two of whom died from disease at a young age.

In her book, the author and illustrator, Nell Pemberton-Rosenzweig, also tells how she became interested in her family history and came to write their story. The author describes the adventures her grandparents had as they moved west, and the hardships they endured because of harsh weather, poor traveling conditions, and separation from loved ones left behind.
