Biographical Note

Mrs. Ellen Mathews obtained the documents from her husband who acquired them in France while serving with the U.S. forces during the Second World War. Mrs. Mathews was formerly a staff member in the Department of Military Science at Michigan State University.

Scope and Contents note

This collection consists of one handwritten notary register (1579-1582) and two letters (1848) from notaries. The specific contents of the register are unknown because of the difficulty in translating its classical French style. (Two faculty members who have dealt with such writings have been consulted, but neither could translate the document.)
