Biographical/Historical note

Daniel Sickles (1819-1914) was a lawyer and congressman from New York. He served in the United State Army during and after the Civil War, rising to the rank of major general. During Reconstruction, he was appointed military governor of the Carolinas, and he was later sent to Spain as ambassador.

This collection consists of microfilm containing correspondence of Daniel E. Sickles, in part from his Civil War service, but primarily from his years as American ambassador to Spain.
