Biographical Note

John Bell (1796-1869) was an politician, attorney and planter from the state of Tennessee. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1827 to 1841 and in the U.S. Senate from 1847-1859. He was the Speaker of the House for the 23rd Congress. He served as Secretary of War during William Henry Harrison's presidency. In 1860, he ran for president under the Constitutional Union Party, a third party which took a neutral stance on the issue of slavery.

Scope and Contents note

This collection consists of microfilm containing correspondence, speeches, and congressional reports. Subjects include national and Tennessee politics, and Bell's candidacy for president in 1860 on the Constitutional Union Party ticket.
